TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

VØLTA JETPACK

EMAT INSTRUMENT CARRYING CASE
FOR INNERSPEC TECHNOLOGIES INC.

WE WERE OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE

When Innerspec approached us with the idea of creating a backpack to carry the VØLTA, we immediately began exploring potential partners and manufacturing processes.
At the time, we were not experts in fabric or designing product of this nature. The prospect of designing an ergonomic soft goods product was somewhat daunting. We deliberated whether to venture into backpack manufacturing or to simply find an existing backpacks that would suits most of our needs. Ultimately, we concluded that we needed to find an existing product as a foundation to build upon.

START WITH SOMETHING AND COMMIT TO FAIL FAST

After exploring various avenues, we identified a suitable product and reached out to the manufacturer. They agreed to produce an OEM product for us to serve as the basis for our future VØLTA backpack.

Prior to completing any 3D models, we extensively tested the form factor of the VØLTA and how it could be integrated into the backpack. This involved hands-on testing to ensure usability in real-world scenarios. While some of our prototyping efforts may have seemed unconventional, they provided invaluable insights.

CREATING A FAMILY LOOK

Once the use case was confirmed and approved by the client, we focused on incorporating the VØLTA into the backpack's design. We didn't simply design the backpack around the Volta; rather, we simultaneously worked on the visual and conceptual design to ensure that future essential features were not overlooked.

EXPLORATION OF NICHE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

It became evident that the backpack would require a durable hard shell to withstand field conditions, such as impacts and drops onto concrete or pipes. To achieve this, we employed double-sided mold vacuum forming using plastic laminated with ballistic fabric, which purportedly offers resistance comparable to bulletproof material (though this has not been tested).

THINKING THE ACCESSORIES INSIDE OUT.

The backpack features internal components to securely lock the VØLTA in place. VØLTA connector's can be positioned either on the top or bottom, depending on user preference. Additionally, strategically placed openings in the backpack allow access to the handle, enabling sideways carrying. The heatsink protrudes through the front opening for efficient thermal exchange when the VØLTA is docked.

THE JOURNEY TO DEVELOP THE JETPACK.

Here is a compilation of tests we conducted during the development of the Jetpack. Some of these tests worked perfectly, while others failed lamentably.

We appreciated the opportunity to perform all of them for the valuable learning experience and humility they imparted upon us.
