When Innerspec Technologies needed to innovate a new product within a constrained timeframe, they turned to Advanta for assistance. With just 8 months until one of the industry's major events, the challenge was formidable: developing an enclosure for their cutting-edge device, the VØLTA. Despite the seemingly impossible task, we strategically orchestrated our resources to meet the deadline. Time was not the only hurdle; there was also the disruptive idea from Innerspec – a user-centric system design for their device.

The notion of incorporating a backpack design for the VØLTA device instead of traditional front-wearing methods emerged as a solution to alleviate back strain commonly associated with similar devices in the Non-destructive Testing market, which typically weigh between 15 to 25 pounds.

Capitalizing on the backpack design, we centered the design on a detachable Rugged Android tablet to replace the typical on device embedded display, enabling remote operation from a short distance via a close Wi-Fi connection. Through meticulous planning and ergonomic assessments, we outlined the user interactions and device cycle, presenting our findings live in Lynchburg five months prior to production.

Within two months of our presentation, a fully operational 3D printed SLS prototype was developed, facilitating thorough testing and validation of manipulations, including thermal testing with key components made of aluminum. This pragmatic approach optimized time and cost for Innerspec's engineering team.

With just two and a half months remaining, we refined the design and manufactured three complete units for the trade show, delivering them just in time.

An additional three months were required to finalize the design, resulting in a fully operational system that was 25% lighter than the version showcased at the event. This revised design also facilitated easier assembly and enabled the identification of an appropriate partner for efficient production.

In a mere 11 months, we transformed ideas into tangible products – an IP65 device (designed for IP67) and its accompanying backpack. Credit is due to the collaborative efforts of Innerspec's management and electronic teams, whose trust in our design process facilitated the seamless and super fast execution of the project.
