A New Kind of Pandora’s Box

To coincide with the release of the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora game, AMD partnered with Ubisoft and Lightstorm Entertainment to create a special edition of its graphics card. From the early stages of the project, Advanta Design was brought on as the industrial designer to develop a product that embodied the rich and sensory universe of Pandora. Conducted under strict confidentiality, the project allowed us to work from exclusive in-game elements and explore original creative approaches.

The art direction centered around the nocturnal and bioluminescent atmosphere of Pandora. Our teams explored several visual and technical approaches, including the use of UV and phosphorescent paints, as well as thermal effects. The goal: to design a product that is not merely decorative, but interacts with its environment, reflecting the living nature of the world of Avatar.

To bring this vision to life, we developed new molds and casting assemblies, enabling the creation of a unique casing with organic geometry. While the technical foundation is based on AMD’s 7000 series, this special edition completely reinvents its appearance and formal language, breaking away from the traditional codes of gaming hardware.

One of the standout features of the design is its thermal awakening: from 35 °C onward, patterns inspired by Pandora appear on the casing thanks to a temperature‑sensitive surface treatment. This sensory detail reflects our desire to create an evolving object, whose aesthetic is revealed through use, thereby extending the magic of the Avatar universe.
