Lending a helping hand to simulate a strong design
MATCH TECHNOLOGY QUALITY WITH PRODUCT DESIGN
CM Labs is a Montreal-based company that develops simulators and simulation software for heavy industrial equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and excavators, to name just a few. Their simulators are essential for training new operators and for keeping operators up to date with rapidly evolving technologies in this market. They reached out to Advanta because they wanted to modernize their initial approach to their product, both in terms of its appearance and how it is perceived by users.
PRAGMATIC CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
CM Labs strives to create the best simulation software on the market. It was essential for us to see this quality expressed at first glance through the simulator we designed. With this in mind, we participated in the visual and conceptual development of the "Vortex Advantage." The approach we had to take for this new design had to be different and had to create a key differentiation point between what the simulators were before and what they are now.
PREPARING THE HAND OFF FOR DETAILING
The CM Labs team has significant internal design capabilities for technical development, which is why they opted to enlist our high level of expertise and conceptualization skills to define the personality of the new product. Our advanced concept team produced sketches and assembly concepts, along with basic surface modeling for production technologies, to assist CM Labs in executing the project. It is common for our team to occasionally collaborate with engineering groups that do not possess these capabilities internally.
STAYING IN THE LOOP TO UPHOLD DESIGN INTENT
At their request, we stayed in touch with CM Lab's engineering team even after our part was completed, to ensure that their developers would work with the approved design intent in mind. It was important for us to support the client by integrating our design process into their mechanical design practices, thus giving the client the power and ability to take over the project after we provided a preliminary concept.
